Another huge positive about the liberal arts major is it gives students knowledge which is applicable to real life situations. It allows students to become generally more interesting and intelligent. While an engineering major chooses courses predominantly pertaining to engineering, a liberal arts major chooses classes which vary greatly from one another and gives the student an extremely broad knowledge of several subjects, such as an overview of the arts, humanities (the study of the human condition), social sciences, mathematics and natural sciences. Julie Schumacher, an American author, once said that ".the literature student has learned to inquire, to question, to interpret, to critique, to compare, to research, to argue, to sift, to analyze, to shape, to express. His intellect can be put to broad use. The computer major, by contrast, is a technician - a plumber clutching a single, albeit shining, box of tools. ".
The major also allows students to learn about subjects which are not as prevalent in other majors, such as philosophy and art. These subjects are not necessarily vital to many career paths, but create students who are able to make intelligent decisions based on past lessons and appreciate the beauty of the world. Students who have graduated from a liberal arts college generally were happier. A survey was conducted by the Annapolis Group of alumni in which alumni from 130 liberal arts schools, the top 50 public universities, and the top 50 private universities were asked to rate their undergraduate experience. The results were very conclusive.
According to the study, 77 percent of alumni from liberal arts colleges rated their undergraduate experiences as excellent, compared to 59 percent of alumni from the top 50 private universities and 56 percent from the top 50 public universities. Most of the liberal arts school alumni stated that their college experience made them better prepared for life after college including their first job, career changes, and graduate school.
