Via social norms and descriptive stereotypes of the qualities that women possess in contrast to men in management, a dialect has been formed amongst many women across the globe in which they are psychologically affected by the norms created by society, in which they perceive to be a barrier in terms of their participation in management Benedict (1988)
According to a 'Locus of Control' research that has been done, which is a research that measures the point to which individuals believe that their behaviour influences their circumstances, the results correspond with a plausible reason as to why there are a lack of women in management. Results have shown that women are significantly higher on locus of control scales than men are; this means that 'women are more likely to believe that their circumstances are controlled by others' (Babcock & Laschever, 2003, p.23).
Men vs Women in Management.
How is this question answered without the theory of stereotyping being applied? Men and women both have the capabilities of becoming managers, there are no differences in gender capabilities apart from the obvious biological facts, but which gender has the ability to be the most influential in the field of management. As many would agree, the key to being successful in many things is down to 'motivation', and the extent of its capacity can determine whether someone could be successful. Men and women have different motivations; Males are motivated with the pursuit to wealth and higher income that can be achieved thru self-employment. In contrast females are motivated to open their own business in an effort to provide more flexibility and a better work and life balance for themselves.
Males Style of Management.
Men's management styles are characterized as being, task-oriented, autocratic, command-and-control and punishment-oriented.
