Why should "Chicanos" conform to one or the other society when they can create their own? Well that's exactly what they did. After being judged for not speaking "correct Spanish" or "correct English", Chicanos began creating their own language which was both English and Spanish. It was a combination of two completely different languages, and by combining these two languages, there was no need to worry about having to fit into a certain society. This new language was named Tex-Mex. Not only did the Chicanos create their own language, they also formed a new culture and society based on their methods of communication, which, in turn, helped them feel like they belong somewhere. I, personally, did feel this way especially because of the pressure put on me by parents and school to speak English or Spanish. This added pressure was a factor that led me to hang out with the friends who shared the same pressure that I had. Us Chicanos are not from one culture or the other so we had to create our own culture, language, and means of communication.
From personal experiences, I can say that one of the main reasons a Chicano has an accent while speaking English is because they don't talk English one hundred percent of the time. At home, usually, we speak Spanish with our family and relatives, and that's what gives us our accent. For example, as a child I moved from Mexico to the United States, and I was always told by my parents that I should never forget my roots and that kept me at 50/50 with English and Spanish, so it was especially difficult for me to keep up with both cultures. At school, I would notice, subconsciously of course, that other kids had the same accent and interests that I did and I began hanging out with them. As we grew older, it seemed as if we were creating our own culture, and if anybody else would hang out with us, it would be hard for them to understand our lingo or what we talk about at certain times.
