The Advantages of Having a Bilingual Education

There are menus at restaurants that are written in Spanish, and to go grocery shopping, the cashiers checking you out may not even know English. Florida receives a large population of Spanish speakers from the islands; the main ones being Cuba, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic. The problem is, counties such as Europe and Asia spend triple the amount of time in school than Americans do teaching usually one or two other languages aside from their native language. According to Donna Christian, in a 2001 article for the Center for Applied Linguistics, stated that Europeans and Asians start teaching children from age 8 a second language in their education systems. The United States starts teaching their students from around age 14. It's an issue that our country teaches it's students so late in age, which is why being bilingual is difficult. .
Speaking Spanish or interacting with people who are bilingual is here to stay, and there is no stopping it. A large percentage of this countries workforce speaks Spanish. More and more Spanish people are also illegally coming into our country, usually crossing the borderline of Mexico into Texas, Arizona, New Mexico or California. Most of these immigrants have never spoken English before, and they're entering cities in America that are typically Spanish-Speaking only. However, American public education systems are the bigger problem. High school only requires you to take two years of a foreign language; Spanish and French being the most popular. It also only teaches you the basics, like how to have a common conversation which is many by memory. If that is the only requirement in American public education, then the student is not going to remember it a semester after. That is not enough time to learn another language, so I would be willing to propose the best solutions to fixing this problem. .
The best solution to becoming bilingual is learning both languages as a child.
