The world's ˜oldest' profession, prostitution, has been around since the B. so people feel that it should be a legitimate job because of that. They think it should be legalized in more areas than it is. In the United States, the only place where it is legal is all of Nevada minus eleven counties. However, in other countries/continents, prostitution is fully legal. Many people believe that there are many good effects from it, but there are not good effects from it. There is a lot of violence dealing with prostitution. Prostitution should not be legalized because young girls should not be taken advantage of, prostitution is not a legitimate source of income, and the dangers associated with prostitution is not acceptable. Before the analysis of these points, a definition is important to understand this controversial topic.
In short, prostitution is defined as, "the exchange of sex acts for money or something else of value " (Sexton and Ames 1). According to Female Prostitution Stats in the US, the main targeted group of people in prostitution is young women around 14 years old (Prostitution Statistics). The act of prostitution can be quite violent because according to Prostitution Statistics, a prostitute is beaten 12 times annually (Prostitution Statistics). The money made with prostitution is astronomical, $58 billion dollars a year (Prostitution Statistics). Many females who need money will get into prostitution because of how much money they could make. However, prostitution is bad because it creates more crime, spreads STD's, and turns women into objects. Yes, it is the 'world's oldest profession', but that does not make it good. Some people in prostitution cannot get out of it because of poverty, drug use, and violence (Rich and Newton 1). Some people believe that "the act of purchasing sex between consenting adults should not be forbidden by the government, but should rather be regulated for society's overall best interests " (Chittom and Bourassa).
