For the past two years, I have been a volunteer at Saving Grace Animals for Adoption. The mission of this organization is to locate unwanted or abused dogs in North Carolina and place them in a "forever home " where love is constant and consistent. The impact of my volunteer work has not only opened my eyes to the problem of animal cruelty but also has made me proud to be a part of a community that gives so much. .
My early volunteer duties were simple tasks such as filling water bowls, cleaning crates, picking up after the dogs, and then my favorite task, giving the dogs some much needed love. After a few weeks, our family made the decision to become a foster family, where we would bring Saving Grace dogs into our own home. In the beginning, we would bring a dog home for the weekend and work on some basic skills like crate training and walking on a leash. But most importantly, we were able to give the dogs the opportunity to experience love and trust from human beings again in a caring, safe environment. I quickly learned from some very timid dogs that trust seemed to be the missing element, and once established, the love part soon followed. Over the next several months, as our experience widened, we began to work with injured and special-needs dogs. Our first was a blind Boxer puppy, who had been .
abandoned at a local animal hospital. We named him Stevie Ray and he quickly became a neighborhood favorite. Next, we took in a pregnant Terrier who had her babies on my mom's birthday. I will never forget watching and then assisting Lucy, as she gave birth to her four puppies. And we haven't stopped giving that much needed attention. We have now fostered twenty-nine dogs for Saving Grace and all but two have been adopted. .
The more time I spent at Saving Grace, the more my learning and experiences continued to grow.
