The world "donor" origins from the Latin word "donare", which means, "to give". In this case, the donor gives life to a recipient. On this day, in 1868, Karl Landsteiner, an Austrian doctor and immunologist, discovered blood groups. He has received Nobel Prize in 1930 for this invention. (Timesofbook.com, 2013). There are four international organizations, who initiate and invoke for the voluntary free blood donation. They are World Health Organization, International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, International Federation of Organizations of Blood Donors and International Community of Blood Transfusion. 193 countries-members of the United Nations, 181 national communities of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, 50 voluntary donor organizations and numerous specialists in blood transfusion from countries all over the world take part in the activities of this day.
