Back then everything was hand-picked, hand stirred, and tasted by workers who have been around beer there whole life and know what perfection should taste like. .
The 1st picture that caught my eye was the Hop pickers painting by "C.H Hart " In this art work they are working hard on the farm, they are working hard on the field to collect Hop. Hop is not something any ordinary man can pick out while farming it requires a talent, it's a talent that not many can come by unless they grew up on it. Hop is something only one can pick with having some experience behind them. Hops are not found everywhere they originally were only found in Germany picked by Dutch merchants, the merchants were the only ones who held this talent.
Hops when first picked over 500 years were given the name medical herb used by Egyptians, but the catch was the ones who actually brewed the hops were the Germans. Hops are only grown seasonally and if not picked during the right peaking seasons it will affect the way your beer tastes. Hops control the taste of the beer, they control the flavor as well as whether you want a hint of lime in your beer or you want a hint of lemon in your beer. The rhizomes found in any hop plant are what ignites the flavor in a beer. Rhizomes are a piece from the hop plants that sprouts in to another plant. From what I see in the art paining of hop picking is a family picking hops together. Everyone in this photo seems to be very intrigued to what they're doing. There are 2 little girls on the floor most likely planting more hops and then there are the elder above picking from the hop plant which is known as trimming the bines. Trimming the bines prevents the soil from getting damaged. It seems from this painting that the hop picking seems to be the elderly job of a woman. I believe the hop picking was done by a woman because it was a more mature job. Women in the 1800s were much more mature than others because of raising their children on their own while the men worked during the day.
