Narrative-Visual Interpretation

The purpose of this report was to critically analyse and evaluate Hieronymus Bosch's artistic style and to understand his technique of narrative, needed to create an environment that depicts an interpretation of the word Ethics.
             1.2 Scope.
The report investigates the artist's life, his philosophy and style reflected through one of his works from his late work phase: The Garden of Earthly Delights. The report will also outline how the environment of word Ethics will be created, and what emotion will this work exude to the audiences viewing it.
             1.3 Method.
It is not known much about the artist's life or where his unique style has originated from during the Renaissance Period. A wide range of books featuring different theories written by different art historians, specialising in the subject of Bosch and his style was read. The evidence was then compared and critically evaluated, in order to decide treatment and interpretation of his work.
The definition of word Ethics was looked up in a Catholic dictionary and Wikipedia encyclopaedia.
It was necessary to find the meaning in the Catholic dictionary, because the research indicated that the main private patrons of Bosch's work were pious Roman Catholics, and his work was of religious nature. The Wikipedia encyclopaedia provided the contemporary meaning of word Ethics as a branch of Philosophy.
             2.1 Jhiernymus Aquen Bosch.
Jhiernymus Aquen Bosch (c.1450-1516) was born in a small Netherlands town of Hertogenbosch. He was a third generation painter in his family. In order to differentiate his work from other family members, who were also actively painting, he signed his work as Bosch - the name of the town he was born in, as suggested by Cumming (1995:25).
The details of the painter's life, are not very well known at present times, but when interpreting his work it should be taken into consideration that he belonged to a very strict catholic order called the Brotherhood of Our Lady, and that the patrons and collectors of his work were very pious Roman Catholics such as the Spanish ruler, Philip II, argues Linfert (1989:).
