Hamlet in todays society

Do you think you have the tenacity to remake a masterpiece? To model and shape it into your dream? Has the last years of your life at this school been a waste? These are many of the questions you will be asking yourself in years to come.
Good evening graduating class of 2003 of the National Film School. I am Christian Case many of you would have heard of me for my famous films and masterpieces that I produced. Let me tell you a little about me. I was born in Australia during the WW2, brought up in a large family with 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Since I was 5 I have loved watching movies and started to go to a school just like the one you are and I ended up in Hollywood making movies as you can see. And at the moment I am in the process of adapting Shakespeare's Hamlet for a film production. To bring the youth of society to see this play I thought to myself what would interest you? And I found, something that you can relate to and understand. So this is why I decided to put this film in a modern context and to change the characters around to a figure you could understand and relate to. To do this I have changed Hamlet to a female who is pregnant, and Ophelia is the father of the baby. The reason that I have changed Hamlet to a female is because I feel that there are certain feminine characteristics of hamlet's character that have been silenced in the original text. Throughout the play I see a reading that I think dominates hamlets character that is that hamlets problems and motivations originate from a problematic relationship with his mother and father. And the reason that I have changed Ophelia to a male is because of the situation that she is in when the king is using her to get to hamlet and her father is using her and she is being pulled around and used she would have to be a male with strong will power and mentally stable and because a male would represent her masculinity. .
Winona Ryder will be cast to play the role of hamlet.
