Things here in Athens are very different than back home. For one thing, I must act like a doting wife to be which is against my nature. But I do not mind much, Theseus has been a gentleman to me. But I have told you that already, I am writing to tell you about what happened between a daughter, father, and two lover boys. Today I witnessed a very strange occurrence between father and daughter, the young girl was standing up for herself. Being that I am betrothed to Theseus the great Duke of Athens I am allowed to sit and listen to all predicaments heard in the Palace throne room. This quarrell, in particular, caught my attention because it was one of love. Egeus, one of my fiance's favorite Nobleman came to request the death penalty for his daughter, Hermia. These drastic measures would be taken if she did not marry Demetrius. Herma it turns out is in deeply in love with Lysander. Demetrius is Egeus' chosen suitor for his daughter, and he insist that Lysander has "bewitched " Hermia's heart with poems, tokens of love, and midnight song sung softly till the break of dawn. Egeus insisted that Demetrius was the better man, but I think this has to do with the fact Demetrius has always been favored by Egeus. .
What disappoints me most is that Egeus thinks he can sell his daughter to his favorite or highest bidder, almost as if Hermia was merely a cow being sold at auction. Egeus is the kind of man that makes me gag and makes me want to prove once again that females can be just as good as any man if not better. But those days are over for me and from now on I must be all a woman must be in order to be accepted. .
Theseus warned Hermia to think long and hard about her decision, he also noted that Egeus did in fact sculpted her with his own hands so he indeed has the power to destroy his masterpiece or keep it. When Hermia then asked what consequences she would face if she choose not to marry Demetrius, Theseus being the kind ruler he is told her she would either be executed or have to become a nun and live life never in another mans arms.
