The Analysis of Approaches

Susan Bordo exclaims on page 194, "I share this author's concern about our body-obsessed culture. But, pardon me, he's just noticing now?" .
Concerning our perfectly sculpted and pampered celebrity idols and models, Bordo discerns "the surreally" fat free physiques of those we see in ads and the media compared to that of our body-obsessed culture. The ads that Bordo displays throughout her essay directly relate to the ideas she presents. For example, the nearly nude Calvin Klein male model whose ass cheeks are flaunted right in your face is juxtaposed next to her thoughts and ideas on male modeling in the 20th century. She explains to us as readers how exactly the new advertising techniques of naked male models (similar to how females have presented themselves in advertisements before) changed the way certain groups of people viewed advertising. Specifically, she discussed the role it played on psyche of females and the homosexual community. Nude male models are now viewed in a different fashion by society, specifically as sexual objects. This perception of male models has different effects on females, gays, and heterosexuals alike. Each group comes to a different mental dissertation as to what the ad before them symbolizes. Bordo comes about her theses through a feministic approach, using this cultural anthropological lens as her means of describing these male models. Also, she humors the reader throughout her essay with personal stories, complying with her straightforward and entertaining style of writing. This tactic enables readers to easily understand her theories on the body.
Judith Butler on the other hand approaches her literature work with a much more complex style. Opening up by asking the reader essentially what makes a human a human and whom actually counts as a "human." This immediate interrogative sentence has the reader pondering what she is about to touch on without even predisposing them on the future topics she is about to philosophize.
