The fourth circle's punishment is pushing a weight uphill so it could symbolize what they did in their lifetime, which symbolizes that they worked really hard for themselves and nothing more. This love that is shown is improper and shouldn't be used as it is represented in "The Inferno" and instead tries to convey a message for you to not be materialistic, greedy, or selfish.
Dante is sent to hell as a intervention from Virgin Mary because of his sins that he committed that he has not yet realized and as Dante walks through the path and then meets the gates of hell where he then encounters a sign that says, "abandon all hope ye who enter here" (Dante III. 9-10), and mean while along the Journey he sees Beatrice who, a spirit from heaven, who he is madly in love with and she watches over Dante throughout his journey so Beatrice sends Virgil to guide Dante so Dante could be safe throughout his journey in the nine circles of hell. Dante being in love with Beatrice is ironic due to the belief that in hell, you're not supposed to have emotions nor hope and previously Dante fell in love with her at a young age until she died and he had regained contact with her again in hell. .
In "The Inferno," Lust is the second circle of Hell which Dante encounters and it has people being punished by being blown back and forth by strong winds with their nerves cut off and are lying down in the dark. People who are in the second circle of Hell are in there because they committed sins of the flesh. The strong winds symbolize people who aren't at rest and will never be at rest due to their desire that they had during their lifetime that they had on Earth and people lying down in the dark symbolizes how lust usually takes place. .
