Malaysian Political Parties Post World War II

 

            United Malays National Organization (UMNO).
            
             UMNO was founded by Dato' Onn Jaafar, the first UMNO president. UMNO was formed to oppose the Malayan Union and united the Malays to defend the special rights of them.`Hidup Melayu' that means Long Live the Malays had been used as a slogan by the UMNO party members. 1946, UMNO had officially became the political party and UMNO constitution was approved. The UMNO constitution include the objective of the party, the formation of its division, and its system of administration. 1951, there are as many as 39 divisions of UMNO were formed with a total membership of 100375 people. The two main divisions of UMNO are UMNO Youth and Women's Wing. UMNO played the central role in demanding the independence for Malaya which is a strongest party to represented Malays.
             The Malayan Indian Congress (MIC).
             August 8, 1946.
             MIC was formed and first president for MIC is John A. Thivy. Tun Sambanthan also put a lot of effort in MIC.MIC was formed for protect the political, economic, and social interests of the Indian community in Malaya. Besides, they main to represent the Indian community by conveying their opinion to the government and fight for the political for the whole Malaya. The MIC entered an alliance with UMNO and the MCA in April 1955. In 1949, MIC had 7000 members but in 1955 its membership had reached 20000.
             The Malayan Chinese Association (MCA).
             February 27, 1949, MCA was formed and the one that have an idea to form this party is Leong Yew Koh. The first MCA president was Tun Tan Cheng Lock. The two main purposes of forming MCA is to protect the rights of Chinese and to maintain the harmony among different races. When the MCA just formed was only the welfare centre. The MCA became a political party in 1949. In 1949, the MCA membership stood at 100000 members and rose to 188000 in 1951. In 1952, MCA and UMNO formed an alliance called Alliance Party. .
