In the course of this assignment, we will undertake the role of studying DHL Singapore and global's transportation and logistics systems. There will be an understanding of the company's background, Its day to day logistical and operational functions, range of transportation facilities, how DHL deals with different customers and how they accustom to their different requirements, and the strategies that DHL has adopted to support customers' requirements along with a few supporting case studies.
1.2 Company Background.
DHL was established in 1969 in San Francisco by three founders, Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom and Robert Lynn. Until the year 1998, when Deutsche Post invested in DHL and it became a fully-owned subsidiary in 2002. The headquarters of DHL is located in Bonn, Germany.
In the early stage of the business, it mainly shipped documents by air freight express mails from San Francisco to Honolulu. A couple of years later, the service region was extended to cover Southeast Asia countries. Thereafter, DHL kept extending its service regions to cover Far East, African and European countries. In 1986, DHL entered into a joint venture with the People's Republic of China and became the pioneer of express delivery service in China and a worldwide transport network was constructed. Nowadays, DHL not only provides simple air freight express mail services, but also services by modes of sea and land transports, as well as contractual logistics solutions.
The DHL Express Service has ceased domestic operations in the United States of America, as of February 2009.
1.3 Research Purpose.
The purpose of this assignment is to look at the daily operations of DHL Singapore and understand how the transportation and logistics system of the company operates. It is crucial to see how specific operational strategies adopted by DHL can cater to the different requirements and needs of its clients.
