Which triangle formation creates the best structure for a truss bridge; right triangle, isosceles or equilateral?.
Hypothesis .
Between the three different triangles, a right triangle has more of a fixed position and can fit more triangles into smaller space. The right triangles create perfect squares where the others do not.
Materials .
Two even platforms about 4-5 feet off of the ground.
Hot glue gun.
Hot glue sticks.
1000 popsicle sticks.
2-3 foot piece of string.
Suspend able hook.
Weights in ounces or pounds.
Scissors .
Zip ties.
Procedures.
Gather all needed materials and blue prints for your bridge designs.
I. For the right triangle truss bridge you will not need to cut the Popsicle sticks. (don't forget to heat the glue gun).
1. You will be making a four sided bridge so all four sides must be the same length. Two of the sides must be the same design (triangles) and the other is railroad tracks. You must use _____ Popsicle sticks and it must be 1 foot long to complete.
2. Assemble a total of twelve of these sides to create 3 four sided right triangle bridges.
3. Take 4 zip ties at the intersection where the sides meet put 2 zip ties.
4. Repeat step 5 three times to finish the first 3 bridges.
II. For the equilateral triangle bridge you do not need to make any cuts on the Popsicle sticks.
1. Once again you will be making a three sided bridge and you must use 55 popsicles and the bridge must be 4 Popsicle sticks long.
2. With this design the triangles fit perfectly together so you will have no problems matching them up.
3. 6 bridge sides will be needed to construct these three truss bridges and 3 bottoms. .
4. Take 4 zip ties, at the intersection of the two plains where the sides meet put 2 zip ties.
5. Repeat step 4 three times to finish the first 3 bridges.
III. For the isosceles triangles the two out of the three Popsicle sticks must be cut to the same length.
1. Once again you will be making a four sided bridge and you must use 69 popsicles and the bridge must be 4 Popsicle sticks long.
