Cary Grant - Handsome and Hilarious

Considered to be one of the most comedic actors of his time, Cary Grant made his film debut in 1931, in a short film called "Singapore Sue," after being signed by Paramount Studios. His first feature film was released in 1932; the romantic comedy,"This Is the Night," in which he played the agile husband of Thelma Todd (Sherrod). For the next few years, Grant was restrained to roles - both leading and supporting - that relied more on his charisma and attractiveness than on his actual performance abilities. .
In 1937, Grant broke his contract with Paramount Studios to become an independent or "free" agent, which turned out to be a brilliant career move. Cary Grants popularity skyrocketed as he accepted roles that took advantage of his uncanny ability to play the suave, stylish men who endure comedic assaults on their pride. He created one of his most notable hits in "The Awful Truth" in 1937, which debuted his precision at being able to play both the romantic lead as well as the fool. He also proceeded to find one of his most companionable costars in Katharine Hepburn, who balanced his wry, lightly sarcastic style against her more assertive style in what is considered one of his most memorable comedies (Grant). Released in 1938, "Bringing Up Baby," is considered one of the most hilarious visual and verbal comedies ever put on film and is a perfect representation of Cary Grant's work (Sherrod). .
In this film, Grant plays David Huxley, a paleontologist who is engaged to be married to his assistant/fiancé Alice Swallow, an unromantic and humorless woman. In the beginning of the film, David is only slightly less rigid and conventional than his fiancée. Due too specific plot twists, David has his first unfortunate encounter with a scatter-brained and impulsive heiress named Susan Vance (played by Katharine Hepburn). He then proceeds to be trapped with her in a hellish, yet hilarious, relationship that lasts for the remainder of the movie.
