Group manager, "Christine," was having a difficult time trying to figure out a problem regarding her teammate's participation in the group. The group consisted of of five members. Each member of the group was designated a section of the project to oversee, and are to complete their portion at least one week before the given due date. However, "Mike," one of the members of the group, wasn't producing for the team as expected, and Christine had to find a solution that would improve the performance and motivation of this team member.
Since the beginning of the project, Mike was having a difficult time making the team meetings because he worked nights as a campus security officer. It was determined, between Mike and Christine that, in order to keep on task, that he would email his project notes to Christine, so she could let the group know what aspects of the project Mike was working on. .
Later, Mike began to feel that the group no longer wanted his involvement, so he stopped interacting with the group, even when the team met during class. One week before the assignment was due, Christine asked Mike for his handwritten notes so she could help him finalize his part of the project. Certainly, she was worried about the group presentation, but was also concerned about Mike.
As the leader of the group, Christine had to start analyzing different factors that could explain and help Mike's motivation towards the group assignment. For instance, it seems that Mike does not have the level, direction and persistence effort that is required to achieve his task, for example, when he was given options to different meeting schedules he would not go to any of them, the amount of effort he was putting was not enough and kept declining over time, and also he did not really persist with his task assignment, he would just make excuses to not stick to it.
