Fighting the Caffeine Addiction

 

            College students do not exactly have a "normal" schedule, and sometimes they need a little something extra to keep going. Students run from class to jobs and extracurricular activities with rarely any time at all in between, and even then, they manage to stay out until the middle of the night. .
             Most students, if not all, resort to caffeinated beverages such as coffee, energy drinks, and sodas for a quick burst of energy. But, caffeine causes an instant rush of adrenaline which causes people to be more alert, focused, and energized. .
             Unfortunately, these energizing drinks are not always beneficial. Many students have reported stomach issues and sudden energy crashes as a result of caffeine addiction. Anxiety, stomach ulcers, and depression are just a few of the several long and short term problems caused by these drinks. Many students do not know of the dangers of the caffeinated beverages that they consume on a daily basis. Caffeine, like nicotine found in cigarettes, is a highly addictive drug. Energy drinks can cause both short term and long term health problems. .
             Little do college students know, the endless amount of caffeinated beverages they consume on a daily basis, is causing countless short term health problems. According to HerCampus.com, too much caffeine is over 300 mg, and consuming this much causes something called caffeine intoxication (First). This would be about three cups of coffee, which is not uncommon for the average college student. With these three cups of coffee, a student can experience several temporary symptoms such as irregular or rapid heart rate and anxiety. Problems with the heart can be extremely difficult to deal with and exceedingly serious ("Rapid or Irregular Heartbeat").
