This notion of discussion reflects Fo's central objective to provoke thought and stimulate change within society. Fo uses the conventions of drama and the median of theater as instruments to expose political issues and provoke debate and analysis.
Fo uses a range of dramatic conventions and techniques to entertain, engage and provoke thought within the audience. Fo uses the dramatic techniques of satire to highlight the flaws of the Catholic Church and demean its traditions of celibacy. Antonia plays on Giovanni's gullibility to Antonia's nonsensical stories whilst satirizing the pope, trying to cover the reason of Margarita's "miraculous" pregnancy." .
This highlights Fo's disagreement of the churches strict tradition and values. This shows one of Fo's attacks on religion. Fo uses the techniques of satire and gullibility to both entertain and provoke thought within the audience. Within my performance I would highlight these humorous techniques to further engage my audience, exaggerating my movements and voice. Within the scene I feel that Fo uses my character to express his opposition and protest to the Catholic Church. My character objective was to ridicule and highlight the overpowering nature of religion in a light hearted, comedic manner.
Another significant technique Fo uses is the subversion of gender roles. The constant bickering, lies and conflict between Antonia and Giovanni is used to present the contemporary issue of the clash between men and women and the struggle for equity and peace between genders within humanity. He also presents the issue of clashes in values; Giovanni has faith and abides by law the systems of society to the point where he would "rather die than eat stolen food " whilst Antonia feels corrupted by them. Within my performance, I would present my character as strong, powerful and courageous to highlight the subversion of gender roles. My movement would be defined and manner of speech should be dominant and over power Giovanni, presenting the strength of my character as a women.
