Even though they are older, doesn't mean that their opinions do not matter. It is important that we show respect even though it can be hard at times (Paggi, 2012). Some elderly people experience changes in speaking ability, and their voices become weaker, or harder to understand. Being patient when listening and knowing when to end a conversation is important (O'Brien, 2012).

Attentive listening requires participation, openness, and receptivity. Clarifying, making sure your message is understood, and reflecting is important to do when communicating with the elderly (Paggi, 2012). When you are unsure of what an individual is saying you should always ask questions. Making sure that your message is understood is very important. For example saying "I heard you say." or "I think are you telling me." are good ways to avoid misunderstandings when communicating with the elderly (Paggi, 2012).
