A Criminal with Good Intentions: Whitey Bulger

"Vanilla," he said with a smile. (Bruno).
Whitey took care of the neighborhood. He helped out many people by offering kindness although at times he committed many crimes. People protected him because of this unspoken treaty. He would help out South Boston if the people did not open their mouths (Bruno). In addition to people in the neighborhood, Whitey had many "guardian angels" in the police system. He had people looking out for him in the FBI along with the Boston Police Department. They gave him a quick hint when he needed to get out of somewhere to avoid being arrested. One person in particular was the boy in the ice cream story, John Connolly. He became an FBI Special Agent and was a key player in helping out Whitey Bulger. Whitey became an informant for the FBI and in exchange the FBI tipped off sting operations to save him ("Profile John Connolly"). Many times when someone would go to the police to testify against Whitey, the case would be dropped and Whitey would again be saved by his "guardian angels." Whitey always ended up getting what he wanted which included escaping the public eye for many years. .
Whitey Bulger disappeared completely the day his partner-in-crime was arrested. "On January 17, 1995, Whitey surfaced on Long Island, where he bought himself a new car, paying $13,000 by bank check. He and Catherine Greig, his girlfriend of ten years, then drove to Grand Isle, Louisiana" (Bruno). Bulger had been sighted in many different places since 1995. .
Bulger is on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List, and on the FBI's Web site, his photo appears underneath Osama bin Laden's. Investigators from the Massachusetts State Police, the FBI, the Boston Police, the Massachusetts Department of Correction, and the state Parole Board are actively pursuing him. Four members of this task force work full-time on finding Whitey. [Before he was caught in 2011] (Bruno) Whitey has since been found and convicted after a sixteen year search.
