Casey Anthony's Defense Muddies Trial During Week 5

Casey Anthony's trial, which many fear might become the next O. case in the sense that the overwhelming majority of the public believes she is guilty but there is scarce hard evidence to prove so, became even more muddled during week five when Anthony's family took the stand. Prosecutors are trying to convict Anthony of premeditated murder when she caused her daughter Caylee to become unconscious by covering her mouth in chloroform and then put duct tape over her nose and mouth so she would suffocate. Anthony then stored the body in the trunk of her car for days before dumping it in the woods. In fact, Caylee was not reported missing for more than a month, when Cindy Anthony confronted her daughter about Caylee's whereabouts (Hutt). .
Mark Lippman, Casey Anthony's parents' attorney, held a press conference to explain that Anthony's parents are in the same boat as the rest of the U.S. - they just want to know what happened. He said her parents do not believe she is innocent, but they do not want her to receive the death penalty either. "They have no idea what happened," Lippman said. "They just want both the state prosecutors and the defense to do their jobs" (Hutt). .
Anthony, who faces seven counts including first-degree murder, pleaded not guilty, stating that Caylee accidentally drowned in the pool behind her parents' house where her and Caylee resided. The defense team also argued that both Anthony and her father found the body, panicked, and covered up her death together. George Anthony denies that claim (Hutt).
Cindy Anthony took the stand and testified that she was actually the one that searched for "chloroform" on the family computer. She said she started to look up "chlorophyll" because her dogs were constantly sick after visiting the backyard (Hutt).
"Both the dogs would eat the bamboo leaves in the back so I started looking up sources from the back yard that could potentially cause her to be more sleepy," Cindy Anthony said.
