Sent two more applications to Hayes, on May 1891 Hayes responded to the letter. Also mailed recommendations to Hayes, in April 1892 Slater Fund gave Du Bois gave him $750. .
Arrived in Europe on August 1, 1892, went to Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin. Spent summer before school year traveling in Eiseniach, were he fell in love with Dora Marback. At school took economics, politics, and history, couldn't take philosophy. When Du Bois was there he witnessed national rivalries and a lot of poverty .
