In the book Night there were many ways that the Jews were dehumanized and desensitized by the Nazis. The Jews were no longer people, they were animals and didn't care about anything or anyone else but themselves. The Nazis took away all their joy and hope and replaced it with dark and evil.
The dehumanizing and desensitizing of the Jews from humans to animals started when the Jews were hermetically sealed in cattle cars. There was no room for everyone to sit down at once, so they had to take turns sitting. It was very difficult for them to get enough air to breathe normally through the little cracks in the cattle cars. There were eighty people in each car and one person in every car was put in charge of making sure that no one escaped and if anyone did escape the person in charge would be shot. Then the Jews had to give all their gold, silver and watches to the German Officer. Anyone who was caught hiding their possessions were shot on the spot.
People were having sex in front of everyone in the cattle car and didn't care who was around. They were behaving exactly like animals and exactly the way the Nazis wanted them to act. The Jews around them just acted like nothing was happening and they didn't want to face the painful truth. Fifteen year old Elie was witnessing all these horrible things and began the question his god and his faith. .
The Jews had to do many things that dehumanized them and abused their bodies. They have to take all of their clothes off and take showers in big groups smashed in a little space and they also had numbers carved into their arms like tattoos which was very painful. They no longer had names, to the Nazis they were just numbers. They were also forced to wear the yellow Star of David at all times. The Nazis forced them to have their heads shaved. Elie and his father tried to have faith, but it seemed like there was no way out and Elie couldn't believe that his god would have created such a horrible place like a concentration camp.
