During the 2002 - 2003 NBA season there were only two teams that were able to make it to the Eastern Conference Finals. Those teams were the Detroit Pistons and the New Jersey Nets. The New Jersey Nets were a high-powered offense that was led by their team leader Jason Kidd. The Detroit Pistons were a "tough as nails" team that were not led by one individual but instead led by a core group of guys who would do anything for the team. Even though both teams made it to the same destination their paths were completely different.
The Detroit Pistons had only one true offense threat and he was considered to small to play in the NBA. Richard Hamilton was the player that was capable of scoring twenty to twenty-five points a night. The Pistons did not go out there trying to out score the other opponent. Instead they went out trying to play defense and hold the opponent to under ninety points every game. This philosophy worked through out the season and deep into the playoffs. The Pistons were able to win fifty games during the regular season, which gave them the number one seed in the playoffs. They won two playoff series with defense alone. .
The New Jersey Nets played defense but only because it was a requirement of the game. They were more focused on having a good offense. They were led by Jason Kidd who is widely considered by many to be the best point guard in the game. He was capable of going out and getting a triple double every game. Not only did they have Jason Kidd but they also had Kenyon Martin who is quickly becoming one of the best young power forwards to ever play the position. Anyone of the Nets starting five could easily go out and score twenty a game each. With all these different scoring options, they led the Nets to the second best record in the Eastern Conference with forty-eight.
The architect of the Detroit Pistons is Joe Dumars. He began his General Manager duties three years ago and has quickly become one of the best GMs in the league.
