Caligula

To say that the Emperor was incestuous would be an understatement. Suetonius writes "He lived in the habit of incest with all his sisters it is believed that he deflowered one of them Drusilla." (263) Incest today in society is look down upon, which is no different from Ancient Rome, now days a person is considered mentally sick and it was the same in Roman times. Caligula obsession with Drusilla continues, when she was married to Cassius Longinus a member of Roman High Society, "he took her from him, and kept her constantly as if she were his lawful wife." (Suetonius 263) Caligula continues to show his lunacy when it is recorded that "he by his will appointed her (Drusilla) heiress both of his estate and the empire." (Suetonius 262) After Drusilla died at a young age Caligula continues to display his madness, he commanded that she be deified and that the legions were to swear "by the divinity of Drusilla" (Suetonius 263) It is recorded that Caligula did not treat his other two sisters in the same manor but frequently "prostituted them to his catamites." (Suetonius 263) But his insane acts were unfortunately not restricted to merely his family any member of Roman high society was lived under the fear of Caligula's insanity.
             .
Senators were not excluded from his madness. But rather they suffered just as much as his own family. .
"Some who had borne the highest offices in the government he suffered to run by his litter in their togas for several miles together and to attend him at supper sometimes at the head of his couch, sometimes at his feet, with napkins.".
             (Suetonius 265) .
Another example of Caligula's insanity is recorded by Suetonius, "Others of them after, he had privately put them to death, he nevertheless continued to send for them, as if they were still alive, and after a few days pretended that they had laid violent hands upon themselves." (265) In yet another crazy incident when the consuls forgotten to give him a birthday celebration they were killed, and the country went without consuls for 3 days.
