These characters never go straight to they"re emotions for example with Jerry and Alice Sutton (Julia Roberts), Jerry pour his heart out to her and she suggested that what he was doing was wrong and in reality no one can every move on from a broken heart. But Jerry simple acted as if he never had said anything and he simple acted passive to the situation. Also with Holden he has similar woman problems just like Jerry has. Holden is a lonely guy which helps him to go out on his date with Sally Hayes, but Holden's fiend for isolation drove her away and insulted her as well. Jerry and Holden have reciprocal relationships with the female species. Jerry interacts with Alice because he said her from being mugged and that kept a good relationship between them. But what Alice did not know what that Jerry has been watching her every move since the last time that they saw each other. Holden try to keep in touch with Jane Gallagher. Jerry and Holden both are terrified of really actually going out and making contact with the woman that they have an obsession for. They both rely on alienation to help but that just only kills them. With Holden he never addresses his own emotions out front, nor does he attempt to encounter the source of his own troubles. Fletcher and Caulfield both desperately need human contact and love but both their protective shield of both they"re bitterness forestalls them from looking for interactions like those. Using Alienation has helped Jerry and Holden be a source to both there strengths and the problems that seems to always be at side. They both seem to demonstrate that they have fears for change and both are overwhelmed by the complexity of it. They want everything to be easily and fixed inside. .

Jerry Fletcher's obsession with the novel is much like Holden and his Red hunting hat. Jerry and the novel "Catcher in the Rye" shows that it is a symbol of his uniqueness and individuality.
