A valuable lesson that could come away from this is that it's not always about what you"re seeing but how you perceive it and what you get from the situation. In each of these situations with a little encouragement, Thurber could have gathered the self confidence he needed to complete these tasks that he saw as impossible. His lack of confidence seen when he said things like "As a soldier I was never any good at all" and "I didn't like the swimming pool, I didn't like swimming, and I don't like the swimming instructor, and after all these years I still don't" goes to show that he lacked enthusiasm and confidence.
