Education

My life is a lesson I losses. I learn one at a time." She shows that she won't give up and this helps encourage others to pursue on in troubled times. Nancy is one of those people that no matter what will have an effect on you. She will teach you things just by example and show you that unspoken words are sometimes stronger then the ones spoken by educators. .
Sometimes a learning institute such as a university may not always be the greatest way to learn. In James Thurber's "University Days", he discussed his experiences in college. His botany class seemed to give him a lot of trouble especially when he couldn't see anything out of the microscope. The teacher tried and tried to help him but eventually ended up infuriated and perturbed. This was not a constructive learning experience and did not help to broaden his knowledge. A valuable lesson that could come away from this is that it's not always about what you"re seeing but how you perceive it and what you get from the situation. Like Nancy Mairs essay they both have a comical tone which helps to engage the reader a little bit more. Thurber then talks about a dumb Polish football player that needed good grades to continue playing on the team. The teachers were often more lenient with him because of this. Here is another valuable lesson in that cheating is not the way to get anywhere in life and it will eventually catch up with you. He then goes on to discuss how he had someone else swim for him on the swim team, a student that couldn't write to save his life and his experience on the drill team. In each of these situations with a little encouragement, Thurber could have gathered the self confidence he needed to complete these tasks that he saw as impossible. His lack of confidence seen when he said things like "As a soldier I was never any good at all" and "I didn't like the swimming pool, I didn't like swimming, and I don't like the swimming instructor, and after all these years I still don't" goes to show that he lacked enthusiasm and confidence.
