Boy Staunton had been the cause of the whole incident when he wrapped the stone in snow and threw at Dunstan, but missed and hit Mrs. Dempster which led to the premature birth of Paul. Percy knew that he was to blame for the problems the Dempster=s would encounter, however, he chose to hide his knowledge and to act as though he felt no guilt. When confronted by Dunstan after the birth, Percy threatened him by saying, AI threw a snowball at you. and I guess it gave you a good smack. you bet it=s what I think. and it=s what you=d think too, if you know what=s good for you@ (Davies 16). Dunstan knew he had no choice but to go along with Percy=s lie. He explained, Awe looked into each other=s eyes and I knew that he was afraid, and I knew also that he would fight, lie, do anything rather than admit what I knew. And I didn=t know what in the world I could do about it@ (Davies 16).
