Gary Soto starts this section by saying "I knew enough about hell to stop me from stealing. Continueing after this he uses imagery abd other devices to help depict what he is feeling.
This section of "A summer life" begins while this little boy is roaming the streets of the German market. As hes walking he sees a stand of pies and stops. After seeing this stand of pies he says "I stood before the rack of pies, my sweet tooth gleaming and the juice of guilt wetting my underarms." By saying this he uses imagery to help depict how he feelsa and uses foreshadowing to help give the reader an idea of what he might do. Furthermore, now the little is trying to decidewhich pie he really wanted and startsnaming them- "pecan and apple, being my favorite, although cherries looking good, and my dear fat-faced chocolate was always a goodbet. Now walking out he hears the "howling of God" in the Plumbing and then sneaks the pie behind his coffee lid.
"No one saw" is what he mutters to himself as hes scurrying across the street. As soon as he wants to start in on his pie, the owner of the house which he was in front of walked out. This is giving the boy a bigger feeling of guilt and he thinks more on what he has done. When he arrives to his househe then starts to panic and the writer uses imagery of Eve to show that the boy was scared of the punishment of being caught. He then recalls watching the video of Adam and Eve being cast into the desertand says "I don't want to be thirsty my whole life." But even the thought of that didn't stop him from starting in on the sin he had bestowed upon himself.
The use of imagery and other literary devices help depict how the boy and the writer feel about the situation. Poverty is a large part of many peoples lives and theft is often seen as just a crime. This story helps show that even in the owrst of situations crime is still a crime and guilt is one consequence that cant be avoided.
