Do you know what reality television is? If not, have you been living on Mars for the past 10 years? Reality television is everywhere you look. Many people believe that reality television is a new concept, but in reality, it has been around for decades. None the less, only until recently, has it become prime time "must see TV". With this new crop of reality television there seems to be carbon copy shows, shows that are based on the same ideas. Do you know what I mean? How many dating shows can we have? Who really wants to marry a millionaire anyway? Despite all the different concepts of reality television, they fall into only a handful of categories.
.
One of the biggest and oldest categories of reality television is the game show/challenge genre. Game shows have challenged one person verses another, a team verses a team, and even celebrities verses celebrities. These types of reality television shows have changed from family games shows to adult physical challenges. Some shows that fit into this category are morning game shows like Price Is Right, evening games shows such as Wheel Of Fortune, to prime time physical challenges like Survivor and the locked in a house with strangers show Big Brother. These reality television shows consist of contestants and prizes, so there for they fall into the game show/ challenge category.
Another category is the romantic genre. As if going to a bar to meet someone isn't hard enough, now you can compete with 25 other women for the heart of one man on shows like the Bachelor, and For Love Or Money. If that isn't bad enough, these poor people get dumped on national TV. If you would just like to have a one on one date, you can go on a Blind Date, and have cameras watch all those awkward moments. Well, even if you already have a significant other, you can always take him to a tropical island to spend weeks with hot young women to find out if he really loves you or not, like on Temptation Island.
