Shrek is one of the best made animated movies of our time; never before has a cartoon had quite so realistically gross characters stomping around in their equally disgusting swamp. Mike Myers, the voice of 'Shrek', an ogre with particuarly bad hygeine, and "Keep out!" and "beware the Ogre!" signs all through his precious swamp, is faced with a problem; his swamp has just been invaded by all the impossibly annoying creatures that inhabit the rest of the world. Theyve been banished from Lord Farquaad's kingdom.
Many of the creatures are ones we know, like the three little pigs, and the gingerbread man. Wanting his swamp back, he goes off to find Lord Farquaad and demand he remove the fairy tale creature from his swamp. Meanwhile Lord Farquaad is searching for a princess to be his bride. His three choices are Cinderella, Snow white, and Princess Fiona. He chooses Princess Fiona. But wait! She's stukc in a tower, in a volcanoe, with a dragon.
Through a hilarious set of weird randomness, Shrek gets himself hired to get Princess Fiona and slay the dragon, all just to get his swamp back. On this mission Shrek is joined by the loud mouthed Donkey, voiced by Eddy Murhpy. (Shrek about Donkey: The trick isnt that he talks, the trick is to get him to shut up). Donkey is probably the funniest character in the movie.
The castle is quite scary looking- especially for the tragically incompetent seeming 'heros'. Lots of action happens, and through a rather interesting discovery about the dragon and -her- opinions, Princess fiona is rescued! (and poor Donkey finds himself stuck with the affections of a fire breathing giant with a bad temper). There are lots of modern jokes, and references to other movies, which make it all very interesting and thought provoking.
After rescuing a Princess who turns out to be quite surprising, if awkward with Shrek's 'ugliness', they make the return to Lord Farquaad''s castle.
