Do I agree with Stimsons Decision to Drop Atomic Bombs.

.
Stimson was sticking to his policy of keeping the atomic bomb a top secret. He knew that the atomic bomb was going to be ready for use before the planned invasion of the Japanese mainland. Stimson voiced his reservations to President Truman about invading the mainland. The reasons for his reluctance was firstly that it was not the best strategic plan to beat Japan and it would be a strain on the army troops who had fought so well up to that stage. He also felt that there would be a huge problem with the amount of time lost redeploying their troops from Europe to the pacific. He felt the time could be better spent. At the back of his mind he had formulated a plan that would not sacrifice the lives of thousands of Americans and would most definitely defeat Japan. His plan was of course to do with the use of an Atom bomb. "In his mind, the dropping of an atomic bomb was the quickest and easiest option".
Strangely enough Stimson was quick to mention that the United States is known for fair play and humanitarianism and "sparing the civilian population should be applied as far as possible to the use of any new weapons." Very ironic considering they decided to drop two atomic bombs on 2 Japanese cities housing completely innocent civilians. Stimson and his Interim committee kept S-1 a top secret. It was decided that an ultimatum should be sent to Japan, but Stimson again intervened and believed that the delivery of the ultimatum should be delayed because, should Japan reject the surrender, the atomic bomb would not be ready to be put to use. .
Another point I found interesting was that in a memorandum documented on May 29, it was stated that America's objectives were to end the war with minimum casualties. They were of course referring to their own people and had no concern for the innocent civilians they killed in Japan. There was a definite plan for the atomic weapons- the Americans would first use them against military objectives, and if there were no result from these attacks they would aim for manufacturing areas.
