Do I agree with Stimson's explanation to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945? .
From November 1944 onward, Japan was subject to numerous bombings, but non-nuclear ones. It was predicted that because of the success of these bombings the war would end in October. When Germany surrendered in May 1945, it allowed the Allies to be able to focus their attention entirely on the defeat of Japan. .
Secretary of war Henry L. Stimson spoke to Truman just after he had been sworn in and wanted to know about an "immense project" that was under way involving a new explosive. Truman was apparently later informed of this project. It was said that America was perfecting a bomb with enough explosive to destroy the world. "Stimson. seemed at least as much concerned with the role of the atomic bomb in the shaping of history as in it's capacity to shorten this war" Stimson then tackled this project head on and an Interim committee was set up to control the S-1 issue. S-1 was the name the atomic bomb project came to be known as. The committee was set up to study and report on the problems of war control and to "survey and make recommendations on post war research, development and controls, as well as legislation necessary to effectuate them." Something interesting to note is that not, in any of the meeting notes was there any mention of the committee's involvement in the decision to drop the bomb. The committee was perhaps purposely misinformed of the power of the atomic bomb- this lack of knowledge deterred them from making an informed decision. .
Stimson was adamant to not fight it out with Japanese troops. Even after the Chinese Prime Minister had physically gone to the White House to inform the president that this would be the best way for America to win the war. The American navy and the American army had a big difference in opinions concerning this issue. The navy believed that bombing Japan was the best way to win the war, whereas the army believed that invading the Japanese mainland was the way to go.
