When Rabbi Binder explained how the Jews were "The Chosen People" (1) Ozzie wanted to know how he could say that when the Declaration of Independence stated that all men were created equal. Rabbi Binder tried to explain to Ozzie the difference between State and religion but Ozzie insisted that wasn't his point. Ozzie's mother had been called in several times because of this kind of confrontation. One day Rabbi Binder had free-discussion, time in which the children were free to ask questions about "religion, family, politics and sports-" (3). Since Ozzie was always getting into trouble with Rabbi Binder he dared not speak out loud so he grumbled to himself. Rabbi Binder heard him and asked him to speak up and let the other children hear what he has to say. Ozzie finally said off the top of his head "Religion." (4) "Why can't He make anything he wants to make!" (4). A small ruckus was heard in the background distracting Rabbi Binder. It was due to Itzie giving a five finger off the tip of his nose at Rabbi Binder. At that moment in anger Ozzie shouted, " You don't know! You don't know anything about God!" The Rabbi whirled back around to Ozzie and said, "What?" Ozzie continued, "You don't know-you don't-" (4). The Rabbi cut him off and in a threatening manner said to Ozzie, "Apologize Oscar, apologize!" (4). Ozzie went to continue and Rabbi Binder put his hand out to shut Ozzie's mouth up and instead Ozzie ducked and the Rabbi hit Ozzie's nose, making it bleed. Ozzie screamed, "You bastard, you bastard" (5). At that Ozzie took off running with Rabbi Binder and the class right behind him. Ozzie ran up to the Synagogue roof and got away from the Rabbi. While he was up there he began to doubt himself. "Can this be me?" (5). He couldn't believe he just called the Rabbi a bastard and not only once but twice. "Is it me? Is it me?" Is it me? Is it me Me Me Me Me! It has to be me-but is it!" (5).
