As well, Patrick is able to overcome his fear of love through his experience with Hana. Reunited with his only daughter who he left many years ago, Patrick is reminded of the memories and intense love he once shared with her. However, Patrick's fear of love has prevented him from being involved in his daughter's life. It was his fear which had caused him to abandon and deny her. In an attempt to avoid the pain of leaving Hana, Patrick tried to convince himself he did not have a daughter, denying apart of himself. As his fear grew, so did his denial, preventing him from searching for her through the years. However, when Patrick is face-to-face with his daughter, he is unable to deny her and must face his biggest fear which he has been running from. This fear is illustrated when he says to Hana "I've died once, I can't die again," (Ondaatje 104) signifying the intense pain he has once suffered because of love, causing his fear of it. Despite his phobia, Patrick cannot block out his love for her which he has avoided for so long. Patrick must face his past and overcome the trauma he endured to enable himself to move on into the future with his love, Hana. By reliving his greatest fear, Patrick is able to reminisce on the beauty of love and the wonderful things it had brought to his life. Patrick also realizes how much of a horrible father he has been for abandoning Hana and never attempting to find her. By facing his past, Patrick takes control of his life and overcomes the fear which has been controlling him. Wishing to have the memories he would have shared with her, Patrick vows to put his fear behind him and be there for his daughter, signifying the start of a new life.
