In today's society why is Jesus viewed as a human sacrifice, for the salvation of all people? Has God suddenly decided that there is no other way to reach humanity? Jesus must die in order to bring the message of the resurrection, why is it necessary that his death be viewed as a sacrifice, instead of the result of the political actions done out of spite by authorities who feel their power is threatened? Or is it possible that the idea of sacrifice is a later made up by the church to sound good?
Jesus does not view himself as a "sacrifice" or "sacrificial lamb", with an exception of the last supper and on passage in Matthew. He does speak on numerous occasions of the fact that he will die or be killed, and will rise from the dead on the third day:.
" .he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders.
and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.".
(Matthew 16:21).
"Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great.
suffering .and be killed, and after three days rise again." (Mark 8:31).
"After they have flogged him, they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise.
again." (Luke18:33).
The single exception appears in Matthew 20:28 does seem to suggest that Jesus viewed his death as sacrificial:.
"Just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many." .
In all three synoptic gospels the last supper carries a different message. In these Jesus does appear to view his death as a sacrifice.
"For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins." (Matthew 26:29).
"He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many."" (Mark14:24).
"Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
