Perhaps one of the most influential American novels dealing with the Puritan period is the Scarlet letter. This was an amazing book filled with drama, comedy, suspense, etc.
the book begins with a woman, hester prynne, who falls in love with an unlikely man, who happens to be the paster of the town church. Problems erupt when she becomes pregnant with their love child. which isnt supposed to happen seen as for one, she is still married (even though her husband is away at war and presumed dead). the waiting period for a woman to remarry is one year. and hester has not yet met that mark. this makes her to the courts an adulteress. to add to her strife, a strange man comes into town and takes the role of the town physician. but to the surprize of us the readers, this man turns out to be none other than the husband of hester prynne! he keeps his identity a secret but demands to know who is the father of hesters baby, however she is blinded by love and refuses to tell. her loyalty to her man lands her in prision where baby Pearl is born. hester is made to go about the town wearing a scarlet letter A on her chest and bring her child with her to share in such pain and mockery while everyone spits on her. this fiction account of puritan society is not very far from the truth, for these people were quite vicious in their ways. .
thank you for taking a walk with me through this great american novel, "the scarlet letter".
