After watching the movie "Dead Man Walking", I got a better understanding of the death penalty. Throughout the movie there are very clear reason why some people are for the death penalty and why others may be against it.
I am actually for the death penalty. Someone charged with first degree murder should be put to the death because of their actions. In the movie, Matthew Ponsulate and an accomplice commit a double murder and rape a young woman. The movie shows that if you have money and can provide a good defense for yourself than you can be acquitted of murder, just like Matthew Ponsulate's accomplice. I think that both of them should have received the same consequences.
Some people say it doesn't make much sense to use capital punishment just because someone has killed another human being. They say that it is almost like condoning death by killing these criminals. I don't believe any of that. They"re pretty much saying it's "OK" to murder people and commit other serious crimes. Their only consequences are sitting in a jail the rest of their lives where they have a warm place to stay and food provided for them, when some of these criminals probably never had any of that to begin with. Not only that, someone who has been given a life sentencing could actually leave after 25-35 years on good behavior. They are let back out in society where they could commit these crimes all over again. If we used capital punishment it would eliminate this possibility. Over time, we have found evidence that proves innocent people were put to death. Even if that one mistaken person out of a hundred criminals were killed, many more lives could still possibly be saved by making sure the other ninety-nine cannot attack again.
Many families have been lost and torn apart because of murder. Families of the victims will never get to see them graduate from high school or college. They will never get to see them get married and grow up to have beautiful families.
