Sloth and Gluttony

Sloth, n: "a: disinclination to action or labor: indolence." Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition, 2003. In regards to Health B1 and health in general, one can assume that the act of being slothful, or static greatly imbalances ones physical as well as ones mental well being. In cases such as obesity, whether genetic or metabolic factors are at play, or rather the result of slothful and gluttonous behavior, the act of laziness and idleness only contributes to the individual's situation that much more. Focusing on the definition of sloth and its relation to this class is to present the idea that not only our physical health, but also our emotional, spiritual and mental health are directly affected by the lack of ones physical activities.
Gluttony, n: "a: one given habitually to greedy and voracious eating and drinking b: one that has a great capacity for accepting or enduring something." Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition, 2003. To be gluttonous is to be greedy. Refined to its purest sense, it is excess. The act of overindulging our appetites for food and drink poisons our physical selves and well as our minds. I believe the general consensus is that people who are obese are gluttonous and visa versa. But this is not always the case. The act of being gluttonous is to consume in excess, whether it is in food, drink, or drugs. With that, I also believe that an imbalance of some type, i.e. mental or emotional, must already be established in order to sustain gluttonous behavior, thereby in itself a means of dealing with an already existing problem or condition. For its general use in Health B1, I believe "gluttony" will be separated from its theological ties, and will instead be presented as an overall idea that consumption in excess at any level has negative and sometimes permanent repercussions to the human body, spirit and mind.
