The Meaning of Creation in the Image of God.
To be created in the image of God can mean different things to different people. Some people take this to mean that we are created to physically look like God while others interpret this to mean that God created the soul of man in his image. Also, there are others that believe this to mean that man is to rule over the creatures of the earth just as God rules over mankind.
Some religious groups, such as The Mormons, believe that God is actually made of flesh and blood and that man was physically created in his likeness. But how can this be true? In Genesis 1:27 it states, so God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. This scripture can be interpreted with the idea of the whole man being created in God's image by use of the words image and likeness. But how could both male and female beings be made in the physical likeness of God? In most all of the pictures and drawings of God, we see him as a large, powerful looking, white bearded older male. Could it be possible that God is both male and female? It seems that this scripture can be interpreted to the reader's belief or way of thinking. It could mean to be created in God's physical or spiritual image. Also, John 4:24 states God is a spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. This scripture blatantly states that God is a spirit and not of flesh and blood. Furthermore, if we are physically created in God's likeness, what about those people who are born with physical defects such as blindness, deafness, missing limbs or internal organs? Many attribute this to the sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The book of Genesis describes the many curses and afflictions that humankind will have to endure due to Adam and Eve's sin.
For all the people who believe that we are physically created in God's image, there are just as many who take a different view, that we are only spiritually created in God's image.
