Problem Solving and Conflict Management

Problem solving and conflict management are important parts of our lives because problems can be found anywhere from families to government, and in any age, race, gender or culture. In order to fully understand what these concepts are, one must know the basic meaning of problem and conflict, and how they relate to each other. .
A problem is a discrepancy between current and desired conditions and is solved by creating a change to these conditions, bringing them closer to that which is desired. There are two parts to problem solving: 1) problem analysis, where you are identifying the problem, where it is, why it is, and its details, and 2) decision making, where you are deciding on a course of action and choosing a decision which are very important. These elements work together because you need a decision in order to actually solve the problem. Problem solving includes assessing the situation and identifying the actual problem. One must also define the goal-what one wants to get out of it and analyze the forces that change the situation. Once strategies are generated, the best technique should be selected in finding a solution, and should be one that is accepted by all members. Problem solving also includes forecasting additional potential problems and consequences and testing the actual strategy selected. The most powerful action in problem solving is becoming more aware and educated of the problem and its ramifications. Although barriers such as emotions, culture differences, and the environment around one can constrain problem solving, a good problem solver can overcome them. Problem solvers should have but are not limited to good attitudes, have a systematic method, and never dismiss another persons" input. Different models can be used in problem solving such as the nine-step model, which takes one through different steps in problem solving and examines each step broken down.
