Organized Sound In Everyday Life

In this case, music is used to create a less monotonous and more pleasant environment which will make people feel better and more relaxed so that they can be more efficient and effective in their work. It is deliberately designed to be heard but not listened to, to have an effect on those who hear it without requiring a conscious listening effort and distracting them from what they are doing. Whatever we do, therefore, we do it in the company of music; working , shopping, banking, eating, sporting. Even our religious activities are accompanied by music, from the Sunday mass to weddings and funerals.
From the examples mentioned so far, it becomes obvious what an essential part of everyday life music is even though its main function, entertainment, has not been mentioned yet. We call it its main function because we cannot think of any kind of entertainment in which music does not play the first role. Its role is so essential that if we removed the music element from whatever kind of entertainment, we could not think of it as entertainment any more. Just imagine music missing from the following forms and places of entertainment: cinema, tv program, radio program, video game, concert hall, theater, bar, cafe, discotheque, nightclub, amusement park, a party, a celebration, anything else you can think of. What would they be like without music? Also imagine what the use of the various audio-visual devices and musical instruments would be if music was missing. I think that most people consider devices like radio and tv sets, record and disc players, tape recorders and VCRs absolutely indispensable and even more necessary than refrigerators and washing machines.
Another aspect of the importance of the role music plays in our everyday life is its use to express feelings and emotions, to convey ideas and thoughts, to teach skills, to soothe and calm , even to cure diseases (music therapy). We are not just passive listeners of products created by professional musicians.
