It is essential for a person to have the basic knowledge of reading and writing to survive in our society. In the past, some people could live in the wilderness, or even cities being illiterate, but the way of living has changed so much, that now it is almost impossible to be a part of a nation, especially in developed countries, not knowing how to read or write. Literacy comes natural to me, so when I changed from being literate to illiterate it opened my eyes to see how all of the typical things that I do in a day like going to work, driving somewhere I've never been before, and going to school, dramatically changed making it hard to enjoy the simple activities that I do on a regular basics.
Nowadays, most of jobs require reading and writing necessary skills because of sharp development of technology. More and more jobs are for literate people, and less of them are for people without any slight reading or writing knowledge. As a server at Joe's Crab Shack, being able to read and write are necessary skills to have. Every day at the beginning of a shift, all of the servers have to read a piece of paper that informs us of the items that we are featuring, and items that we don't have that day. Now if I didn't bother reading that piece of paper because I was illiterate, it could lead to me selling a customer a certain item on the menu that we ran out of. Never the less, even if I was to ask another employee what special we were having that day, I wouldn't be able to write it down if a customer wanted to order it. A lot of times there are customers that want to know where certain things are on the menu, so they will say, "Do you have fish?" and I will have to point exactly where all the fish items are. If I did not know how to read, I could not show them where it is, therefore they will think I am and either rude or stupid, making it hard for me to get a good tip. .
Language is the basis of any education.
