Cat's Eye: Half a Face

 

            In the novel the paintings reveals to us how Elaine feels about her past. Some of these paintings describe how she sees herself in her relationships with other people. In Elaine's only painting of Cordelia, Half a Face, Elaine tried to paint how Cordelia would look like from her memory. "Half a Face, it's called: an odd title, because Cordelia's entire face is visible. But behind her, hanging on the wallis another face, covered with white cloth."p.227 This painting shows us the relationship Elaine had with Cordelia. Although Cordelia's entire face can be seen in the painting, but there's also a hidden face behind Cordelia. "I am afraid of Cordelia. I am not afraid of seeing Cordelia. Im afraid of being Cordelia."p227 I think that Elaine sees herself in the painting covered by the white cloth, she is the unseen face of Cordelia. Throughout Elaine's childhood she has been bullied by Cordelia, however that all changed when they entered high school. Gradually Elaine changes from being the tormented into the tormentor of Cordelia. Elaine is reluctant to accept that fact because she doesnt want to acknowledge that she is becoming like Cordelia.
