Analysis of The Poem

This peom was written by a black student at a college with a majority of white students. He is told by his instructor to, "Go home and write a page tonight and let that page come out of you then, it will be true" (lines 2-5). We find out where this black student lives - in Harlem - down the steps, through a park and down accouple of blocks away from the college neighborhoold and into Harlem, his neighborhood. He also tells us some things he likes - normal things, just like anyone else would like. Then the second half of the poem, he talks more about similarities between himself and the instructor. He does not seem angry or resentful, I think he is just trying to get a point across that there really are no huge difference between the two of them just because he is black and the instructor is white. They both like the same things, they are both American, and they can learn from eachother when they thing about who they are and where they come from. Although they obviously have some differences, they are still both American and human beings. .
This poem was very well written, and it makes me feel sad that there are minorities out there who feel angry and resentful at others because they are treated differently. Rasicm is something that will be around for a long time - and that anger me. We are all humam being with breains and hearts, we live in this world together, not apart. I don't understand in the long-end how we are all so different.
