Whigs And Democrats

The only government the Whigs favored was the "American System." Under the Whigs This system would support protective tariffs, federal aid for internal improvements, and a strong national bank. Wealthier people who lived in and around major cities were mainly attracted to the Whig party because their policies benefited manufacturers and industrial wage earners. Also, large farm corporations supported the Whigs because Whigs could give them cheap bank credit which they needed for an over abundance of supplies. On the other hand, democrats were often favored amongst the smaller rural farming communities, because of their focus on agrarian lower class issues. Although both parties represent many different ideas, they were similar in that successful people, who had good jobs and voted in large numbers, lead both parties. This spirit wasn't just within the American people, this also happened with many immigrants who came to America because they were unsatisfied and unhappy with the way things were run in the country they came from. Most were trying to find a place where they could start new and create a political structure that would facilitate an individual freedom unlike anything that they had previously experienced in Europe. They often favored the nature of democracy in the New World because it was different from the same social strata they had in Europe. For them, this resulted in the first new country where there was no preliminary basis for an aristocracy. They had free reign over their lives, class, and social structure. They were attracted to the idea of Laissez Faire that said government intervention would only hamper economic progress. The nation must rely solely on private enterprise. Democrats based their campaign on this using religion, morals, and economic affairs as its basis. This system also appealed to Catholics, Episcopalians, and all groups who preferred the government to pursue a hands-off policy toward personal behavior, and not politics that were based on morality.
