Crime And Deviance

The problem with studying crime statistics is that they probably tell you more about the organisations that produced the figures rather than actual occurrence of crime & deviance. It depends on what country you are in when you commit certain crimes for example if you in Saudi Arabia and are got drinking alcohol then you will be in trouble as you are breaking the law, yet, in Britain the consumption of alcohol is legal. If you are in the Netherlands you will not be breaking the law if you purchase Cannabis yet in Britain you could face the maximum prison sentence of two years. .
In order to understand the level of crime and deviance, the government carries out surveys, the most popular being the British Crime Survey (BCS). This apparently records the statistics of crime. The problem I think with it is it doesn't show the extent of all crimes. There is a lot of crime that goes unreported, like say for instance vandalism or sexual harassment at work. It suggests that the chances of an average home in the UK being burgled occurred only once every forty years. It also suggested that women and the elderly were unnecessarily anxious about being the victims of crime and concluded that most likely victims of crime were young men (Letts 2001). This I find hard to believe as nearly every one I know has been burgled more than once in the past ten years.
According to BCS respondents, 41% of crimes are not reported to the police. (Stephen Moore 1996).
Another way the government record crime is via official statistics which are estimates which are provided by the police, which give an official account of the volume and trends of crime, although the statistics do not comprise a complete record of criminal offences. For instance those dealt with by other organisations such as corporate crime are not included. When a prisoner has a list of offences they are most often reduced to one however this can also work on the other hand if the prisoner agrees to have other unsolved crimes added to his list, they are called T.
