In this particular part of the film some of the soldiers, whom were Algerian, were denied tomatoes as part of their rations. As this unfolded, one of the Algerian, French soldiers, knocked over the entire wooden crate full of tomatoes and stated that if he could not enjoy them, then none of the other soldiers can, because even though they have never stepped foot on the soil of France they were all fighting for the same cause. Thus was the beginning of the Algerian soldiers being identified as people of France and then therefore were granted the access and consumption of all the same rations ...
